How to choose photo scanning resolution: when 600 DPI is enough, when 1200 DPI is worth it, and how DPI relates to retouching, print and file size.

A single family photograph may exist only as one slightly faded print. That is why the decision of how to choose photo scanning resolution should not come down to picking the largest available number. DPI affects how much detail is recorded, the scope for retouching, file size and later use of the digital copy. A well-matched resolution lets you save the image in a quality that makes sense for that particular keepsake.

What does DPI mean when scanning prints?

DPI, dots per inch, describes how many points the scanner will record along one inch of the original. The higher the DPI value, the more pixels we get in the file. That does not automatically mean every photograph scanned at 1200 DPI will look sharper than the same photograph at 600 DPI.

A scanner can record fine details of the photographic emulsion, grain, paper texture, scratches and dust. If the original does not contain more information, a higher resolution will not create it from scratch. It can, however, give more material for precise restoration or a safe enlargement of the photograph.

It is also worth distinguishing scanning resolution from the quality of the print itself. A photograph taken years ago does not suddenly become sharper only because it is scanned at high DPI. Digitisation is meant first of all to record faithfully what remains on the original, and then to allow gentle processing without exposing the family keepsake to further damage.

How to choose photo scanning resolution: 600 or 1200 DPI?

For most standard family prints, such as 9 × 13 cm, 10 × 15 cm or 13 × 18 cm, 600 DPI is a very good choice. That resolution gives a file sufficient for viewing on screen, sharing with relatives, making a reprint in a similar format and natural retouching of typical dirt, small scratches or colour casts.

For example, a 10 × 15 cm print scanned at 600 DPI gives an image of about 2360 × 3540 pixels. That is more than 8 million pixels — far more data than needed for publishing on the internet or display on a phone. At the same time it remains practical when storing a whole home archive.

1200 DPI is worth choosing when a photograph is small, is to be noticeably enlarged or needs more advanced work. That applies especially to ID photographs, portraits cut from a larger picture, small prints from the 1950s and 1960s, and materials with tiny faces or important details in the background. A larger file gives the retoucher more freedom when removing cracks, stains, creases and losses.

1200 DPI will also be a reasonable choice if you plan a larger print. This is not only about wall decoration. An enlarged portrait of a grandmother can become a gift for the whole family, and a restored wedding photograph of parents can return to an album in a new, lasting form.

When is 600 DPI the best solution?

600 DPI works especially well when you digitise a larger number of ordinary prints and want a reasonable combination of quality and convenience. It is a good standard for family albums, holiday photographs, school ceremonies, First Communions, weddings or everyday frames from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

Choose 600 DPI when photographs will mainly be viewed on a computer, television or a digital frame. It will also be the right option if you want to share the archive with siblings and children, keep it in the cloud or order reprints similar in size to the original.

This resolution is not a half-hearted compromise. For many prints it is simply optimal. It lets you record the image in high quality and at the same time limits very large files that, with hundreds or thousands of photographs, can hinder ordering and copying the archive.

When is 1200 DPI worth choosing?

Higher resolution makes most sense when every detail of the original is precious. It may be the only surviving photograph of great-grandparents, a small portrait carried for years in a wallet, a photograph with faces visible in the distance, or a print meant to be recreated in a larger format.

Choose 1200 DPI also when you plan restoration of a badly damaged photograph. Cracks, folds, tape marks, colour casts or losses require work on individual fragments of the image. A larger number of pixels will not repair damage by itself, but it will let more delicate tonal transitions and edges be kept while they are reconstructed.

Remember the practical cost, however. A scan at 1200 DPI has four times as many pixels as the same original scanned at 600 DPI, so the file can take far more space. With a large family archive it is worth using this option selectively — for the smallest, most precious or most demanding prints.

Print size changes everything

A small photograph needs higher DPI more often than a large one. If you have a 5 × 7 cm print and want an aesthetic image for a larger print from it, 1200 DPI can be the right starting point. If the original is 20 × 30 cm and is to be kept or printed at a similar size, 600 DPI will usually provide more than enough data.

Do not judge a photograph only by the size of the paper. What is in the frame also matters. A large group photograph may need higher resolution if you later want to isolate and enlarge one person’s face. A large, simple portrait with no need for cropping can look excellent after scanning at 600 DPI.

DPI, retouching, colourisation and a natural result

Scanning is the first stage of work on a digital copy. If a photograph needs retouching, a well-made scan should keep as much subtle information as possible: natural transitions on the face, hair structure, clothing outlines and background details. Then traces of time can be removed without the impression that the image has been overly smoothed or artificially sharpened.

With colourisation, readability of details is especially important, but resolution itself does not replace historical care. Colours should support the character of the photograph, not turn a family portrait into a contemporary illustration. Sometimes 600 DPI combined with good processing gives a more natural result than an excessively heavy file in which every imperfection of old paper is visible.

If you are unsure whether a given print needs 600 or 1200 DPI, look at it in the light. See whether it is small, whether it contains tiny faces, whether it is to be enlarged and whether you see damage on it. Those four questions usually lead to the right decision.

JPG or TIFF — the format after scanning matters

Resolution and file format work together. JPG is convenient for everyday viewing, sending to the family and storing many photographs without taking too much space. It is a practical format for finished, restored photographs that are simply meant to please and recall important moments.

TIFF keeps more data and is especially useful when you want an archival copy for further processing, professional printing or long-term protection. TIFF files are, however, clearly larger. For the most precious photographs a good solution can be to keep an archival file and a separate, convenient JPG copy for everyday use.
